For many African American families, land inherited from our ancestors is a treasured gift representing a window to the past, that tells the story of a family, community, and way of life. For others, the mention of inherited land evokes stories of torment and the struggles involved in trying to hold onto the land.
Attorney Gary Altman, Founder and Principal Attorney at Altman & Associates, discussed many issues related to inherited land. He provided information on the basic terminology and research of land records, how to resolve family disputes over the land, clearing title to the land, and ways to prevent the loss of cherished family land. He also discussed the importance of including land in an estate plan.
