Mending Broken Ties: Reconstructing Family Trees Sawed by Slavery

Melvin Collier presented cases demonstrating how to find family members displaced by slavery.  Our enslaved ancestors lived with the constant threat of forced separation brought about by a multitude of scenarios. Family members were separated through sale, to liquidate assets and pay off slaveowner debts, as part of estate settlements, relocation of slaveowners, where the slave was perceived as a troublemaker, and in many other situations.  Melvin  demonstrated strategies for locating family members who were lost seperated slavery.
